About the Project
Lake Maggiore sits on the border between northern Italy and Switzerland, reaching depths of over 370 metres: making it one of the deepest lakes in Europe and one of the most challenging freshwater diving environments on the continent.
The ZeroEmissions Lago Maggiore project combines technical diving with scientific research: documenting underwater ecosystems, surveying historical wrecks, and recording freshwater biodiversity at depth. Cold, clear water and dramatic topography make it an exceptional environment for both exploration and science.
What We Do
Wreck Surveys
Mapping and documenting historical vessels resting on the lake floor: from WWII-era boats to early 20th century craft.
Ecosystem Documentation
Recording biodiversity across depth zones. Cold, clear water means exceptional visibility for scientific observation.
Training Dives
Lago Maggiore is our primary training ground for OC and CCR students: variable conditions, real depth, no salt.
Environmental Monitoring
Tracking changes in water quality, temperature profiles, and aquatic life distribution over time.
Why Freshwater Matters
Freshwater ecosystems face some of the most acute pressures from climate change, pollution, and human activity: yet are often overlooked in marine conservation. By applying the same scientific rigour to lake diving that we use at sea, we contribute to a better understanding of these vital environments.
